Being Young, Being Digital: Some Observations on Young People's Use of Social Media
Speaker:

S. Craig Watkins
The University of Texas at Austin
Department of Radio-Television-Film

Abstract:
From the moment new communication technologies began to infiltrate American homes, young people have been among the early explorers and early adopters of computers and the Internet. Today, teens and young adults are credited for the ascent of social media platforms like MySpace, Facebook, and YouTube. The social web has been variously characterized as empowering, participatory, and communal. Drawing from original research including survey data and in-depth interviews this talk considers the rise and use of social media. Designed more as a public discussion about the steadily evolving role of social media technologies in our lives the paper considers three questions. First, how dominant is social media in young people's lives? Second, what are young people doing with new communication technologies? The third question considers the social impact and consequences of social media.

IEEE 125th Anniversary Celebration!

This year marks the 125th anniversary of the IEEE. In celebration, parties, technology and engineering showcases, and general celebrations are being organized around the world. Austin is lucky enough to be hosting one of the few celebrations in the US and every single IEEE member is invited to come! This includes all Student Branch members!

The celebration will include a technology showcase, along with a panel discussion about 'The Engineer of 2020." One of the speakers on this panel will be our own department chair - Dr. Ambler. After the showcase there will be an honest-to-goodness party - the Brain Party. So to RSVP for this event, email vsegna@austinchamber.com and let her know that you are a student branch member and then bring your student ID along when you come to the party. Spring Elections!

Remember, spring officer elections are coming up tomorrow, April 16th at our general meeting!
The meeting is at 5:30 ( NOT 7:00! ) and is in RLM 4.102 (the regular room).
All positions are available for IEEE members to run for, and to hold an officer position you must be a registered, dues-paying, national IEEE member. This can be completed shortly after election, if needed.
If you would like to run for a position, come by the office at ENS 133 and sign up outside the door on the lists. If you cannot make it to the meeting but would like to run anyways, write up a speech and have someone give it for you.
Also, ECE Tech Area night is right after our meeting!

Positions are listed in the constitution: http://ieee.ece.utexas.edu/documents/constitution.pdf

IEEE E-Week Update!

IEEE is on a roll this year for E-Week!

We are currently in second place behind ASME and in terms of participation points we are WAY ahead.
Our biggest success so far has been going to the Austin Children's Museum on Saturday (Hey, it's not like we had dates or anything). Also attending was IEEE-PES, who brought their power bike - a big hit with the kids.
Because of PES participation and the number of people we had attending the event, we got double points, which means that we still have a fighting chance this E-Week!

As a reminder, our big event of the week (Guitar Hero!) is tomorrow, Monday the 16th at the SSB from 10-12 AM.
All students attending who sign is will get free t-shirts and snacks provided by IEEE (until we run out). Stick around and record your highest score live and the 1-3rd place winners will receive prizes. You do not have to be present to win, you just have to have your score officially recorded by our judge.

Get out there and sign in for IEEE at as many events as possible, we receive points for every single one of you. And who knows, if you get enough you just might get a free ticket to the Salt Lick Dinner next weekend...
